Here are some pictures of past Market Day products, services and posters. Some parents had trouble viewing the web album because you need a Google Account in order to view the pictures. Some students partnered with another student to run their business. I have no problem with partnerships as long as the work gets done. I will put a limit on the number of partnerships to 5 because too many partnerships will limit the numbers of products and services available for purchase. I thought that I had a link for Market Day on the class website, but I think it may have been deleted. If you have any further questions, please let me know. You can leave a question in the comment box below the post as well.
Your child will bring home their report cards today. Please be sure to sign the envelope and return the empty envelope on Wednesday. We are beginning our 3rd quarter which will only be 8 weeks long. Here is a list of goals that will be accomplished this quarter:

Science: Study of Plants which will include the needs of plants, the life cycle and the characteristics of plants that are passed on from the parent plant. I will post a study power point on the website prior to our test. We will be growing a bean seed in class and your child will bring this seed home daily. We put the seed in a small plastic bag to be able to observe the growth and students wear it as a necklace.

Social Studies: Economics is the topic of study this quarter. We will accomplish this through our hands-on unit called Market Day. A very detailed letter will come home today explaining what students will need to do. A short oral presentation will be part of this unit. There are details also on the class website.

Math: We will continue with our study of multiplication and division. Students should be working to memorize their facts 0, 1, 2, 5, 10. Helping your child to skip count by these numbers will be very helpful to them. We will also continue our 5 minute weekly timed tests on addition. Students need to complete 100 problems in 5 minutes with 90% or better in order to move on to the next level. Using the Xtra Math website will help them with this or good old-fashioned flash cards. We will then move into metric measurement of length. Students will need to measure, read measurement and compare lengths. Each chapter in our math book has story problems as well. After length, students will learn about measuring mass and volume in metric measurements. This will conclude our first math book for the year.

Reading: Students will continue to learn and practice reading strategies to help them figure out words and comprehend their reading. The goal is to pass a level 24 test during this quarter. I will begin testing the first week of March. Students will need to read part of the story with good pacing, be able to predict what will happen (3 things), complete reading the story then tell a detailed retelling. Students should also be able to tell what the lesson or main idea of the story was and any connections they have to the story. You can help your child by making sure they are reading daily and talking with them about their reading.

Writing: Students will continue to work on using correct capitalization, punctuation and grammar. In March, students will need to write to a prompt that will be graded on Ideas, Organization, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice, Voice, Conventions. I have put some writing in this week's homework packet to help students practice. There are prompts for students to write to. Read your child's work to check the following things:

Ideas: Stays on topic and uses some details to tell their story
Organization: There is a clear beginning, middle and end to the piece. It makes sense and reads easily.
Sentence Fluency: The sentences do not all begin the same way. The length of the sentence varies and transitions are used (first, next, then, last, finally, etc).
Word Choice: The student uses great adjectives and verbs to describe nouns. Good, fun, and said are not great word choices.
Voice: A sense of the writer's personality is shown. Emotion is created due to the choice of words.
Conventions: Periods & capitals are used. Word wall words are spelled correctly, correct verb tense is used.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784413819920208178.post-60243375646709994452012-11-16T15:09:00.001-06:002012-11-16T15:09:20.728-06:00November 16, 2012Math:
We are working on solving word problems using addition and subtraction. Students will need to be able to read a problem and decide which operation to use to solve the problem. I tried to make it memorable by telling them they were doctors trying to diagnose what their patient was missing and what operation they would need to save their patient. The basic model is called Part, Part, Total (whole). If you can picture a triangle with the total at the top and both parts in the lower corner you have the model. So students can memorize this:

Part + Part = Total Total - Part = Part

If the patient is missing the total, then the doctor should use the addition operation. If the patient is missing a part, then the doctor should use the subtraction operation.

I think this really helped the students to visualize and understand the meaning of the problem. We have much more work with vocabulary next week.

Science

We are learning about the different landforms and sources of water on our Earth. We did partner work today which included reading a book together and finding three facts. We have been discussing the difference between fact and opinion as well. Students really enjoyed this work today.

Reading:

We have been working on finding the root or base word to help us figure out words. For example in the word unhappiness the root word is happy. We learned that un is a prefix and ness is a suffix. Finding root/base words is fun. You can have your child find them in their reading.

Writing:

We are talking about the use of transition words: First, next, then, last, finally. As well as adding voice to our writing by choosing great feeling words. We read a book called How Are You Peeling? Which talked about many types of feelings using vegetables made into faces.

Remember next week is a short week. We are off for Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday. I will be sending home the permission slip for the November 28 field trip on Monday, please sign it and return it on Tuesday.

Thank you for sending your children to me ready to learn. I love coming to work each day and look forward to seeing all the eagerness in their faces. I truly enjoy working with your children. Keep doing what you are doing, because from what I can see, your children can learn because they feel loved, safe and happy!

Enjoy the weekend! Go Lions!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784413819920208178.post-14852356706668311462012-11-06T13:38:00.000-06:002012-11-06T13:38:07.211-06:00November 6, 2012Did I really just type the word November? Hard to believe, but we have just finished the first quarter of school. I would like to talk about students writing in this post. Writing is always considered one of the hardest thing to teach students because there is so much to teach when you really think about it. Writing includes grammar, punctuation, constructing sentences, organizing thoughts, and choosing words that will interest the reader. As I sat with the other second grade teachers and we were looking at the writing work of our students we really realized how much thought is required for one writing piece. We also realize that our students are seven and eight years old, and what we expect of them now was what we did in sixth grade. Writing standards for students today compared to when I was in grade school is dramatically different.
In order to help motivate my class, I showed them some "mini movies" that past students and I created with their writing. The class was mesmorized when they watched these short stories on the big screen. Students now have the choice during writing to work on their own or with a partner to create a fictional story or an informative writing piece that can be turned into a mini movie. They must submit their writing to me for review before it can be made into a movie. This project seems to bring out the best in student writing because they know the standard is high for me to make the writing into a movie.
Writing instruction this week will be a review of great beginnings, transition words and how to add detail. We will look at books to see how real authors start stories and I will teach them how to start a piece with a question. Some transition words include: first, next, then, and finally. When I meet with students I tell them to tell me first what they want to write, then tell them to write what they said. I then tell them to reread what they wrote. Rereading is the most important part of writing, because it helps kids to make sure they did not leave out words and helps them organize their thoughts.
I teach them to add detail by having them read the last sentence they wrote and then ask them what else they can say about that idea or topic. For example, I wrote the following in class: One hot July day, my family and I went to Michigan Adventure. (What else can I say about Michigan Adventure?) Michigan adventure is an amusement park and water park. (What else can I say about amusement or water park?) We decided to start our day in the water park. Each time I write a sentence I then reread it and decide how I can add a detail about the last topic.
In Math we are nearly finished with Chapter 3 on subtraction. The students are getting really proficient with borrowing across the tens and hundreds place. We will hit subtracting across zeros again to reinforce this concept. We started Math Journal as a choice during math time. Students have a math writing journal where they copy a short problem. Students then have to solve the problem and explain how they came up with their answer. This is a worthwhile activity because it includes reading, problem solving, and writing. Their higher level thinking skills will be developed through this activity. Students can use drawings to solve the problem if necessary. The first problem students tried was: 16 paws. How many tigers? There are many ways to solve this. Most students drew the tigers and counted. They said they kept adding four until they came to 16. This problem is using multiplication, repeated addition, skip counting or division, depending on how your child chose to solve it. I look forward to the progress they make in this new area of mathematics. Our upcoming chapters include:

Chapter 4: Addition and Subtraction models to help with word problems

Chapter 5: Multiplication & Division (How to)

Chapter 6: Multiplication Tables, 2, 5, and 10s

Chapter 7: Metric Measurement of Length

Students are excited about the upcoming Halloween Party on Wednesday, October 31. We will be eating breakfast in our costumes and enjoying a game and small craft. Please be sure that your child has a bag to bring their costume home in so that nothing gets left behind in the classroom.

We started Raz-Kids this week which is an internet based reading program. Some students used it last year and were familiar with the program. We used it this week in computer lab so students know how to get on the program. A note will go home today explaining how you can set up a free account for use at your home. Title I funds paid for our classroom membership, so please check it out. This is yet another way students can help to improve the amount of reading they are doing. The reading progress has been good in this class. Some students are able to read for longer periods than others. Beginning on the 23rd, some students will be pulled for additional reading assistance from 9:00-9:40 everyday. While students are gone, I will be meeting with small groups or individual students to monitor their progress in reading.

We are completing Chapter 2 in our math book; addition with and without regrouping. I must say, this class is doing really well. My method is to give students individual or small group assistance when I see they are not quite getting a concept. This one-on-one time has really helped some students overcome their difficulty. Once work is completed, I check it right away, make note of the students performance then have them correct minor mistakes, or meet with them to assist with difficulties. I'm finding that the quick feedback to the student is really helpful. Students are also getting used to finding their mistakes and correcting them by redoing the problem. We will have our test on Tuesday, October 23 and I expect great results as we had with the first test. Chapter 3 will cover subtraction with out borrowing to begin with, then we will move onto borrowing and finally subtracting across zeros. Please check in with your child on their homework to show your support and give them the encouragement they will need to succeed. Remember it is better to compliment hard work than to say they are smart. Students who realize they must work hard to accomplish tasks perform better when tough problems come up. They don't give up compared to students who are always told they are smart. There is a difference.

We will also have a short quiz on science, October 29 and social studies October 30. Students will bring home materials they can review.

Please remember there is no school for students on October 26. Enjoy the weekend, the weather is supposed to be quite nice.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784413819920208178.post-33694784684644095972012-10-12T15:09:00.001-05:002012-10-12T15:09:15.816-05:00October 12, 2012Well we turned apples to applesauce this morning and are going to enjoy it soon. Students are in Spanish at the moment and cannot wait to taste their creation. This morning we began our investigation reporting form using the Scientific Method. Students had to come up with a hypothesis on how a solid apple turns to liquid applesauce. We also wrote a procedure. Students did a great job yesterday working with a partner comparing their two apples. Students were very engaged and came up with some good attributes.

Today in math we practiced more addition with regrouping or carrying over to the column right next door. I'm meeting with each student individually to have them check in with me to be sure they have the concept and so far we are all doing very well. This week also brought in story problems that need to be read and we are starting to find key words that tell us that we need to add. Being able to read and figure out what we need to do with the numbers is a very important skill. The words we are learning include: altogether, more, in all, total. These need to be key words in your child's mind that help them to know they must add. I think we are doing really well with a concept that has many steps.

We have started a discussion in Social Studies about life in the past. To begin the discussion and give the students a visual all the second grade classes watched Little House on the Prairie. The students really enjoyed the program. Students were able to see how clothing, homes, towns and transportation were in the past. We will be doing some written work in class on this topic for this card marking. In order to give the students a hands-on experience, the second grade teachers are planning a field trip to Cranbrook on November 28. A note will be coming home next week with the details. I will be needing chaperones to attend the field trip. We will eat lunch at Cranbrook and learn about early Michigan Settlers.

Accelerated Reader has also started. We have library check out every Tuesday and students have to check out at least one non-fiction book each week. My requirement is for each student to take and pass one test per week. The student must score 80% or higher on the computer based test. Please help your child be successful by having them read their library book to you and then you can give them a short quiz on the book. Students earn points for the quizzes and Ms. Barada in the library will award small prizes for points earned each month. All students who pass at least two tests per month will be invited to an ice cream party at the end of the year. In addition, top point earners in each grade level will be invited to a field trip at the end of the year. If students keep up with the once a week classroom requirement, they should all be able to go to the ice cream party. Every Wednesday in class I put a list of names on the board as a reminder of who needs a test by Friday. If students do not take a test one week, I hold them accountable for two tests the next week. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding Accelerated Reader (AR).

Here is a bit of how our week looked: Comparing leaves, comparing apples, tasting applesauce and enjoying oranges from the lunch room.
The class average was 92%. The kids are working hard and I do tell them that math takes hard work and concentration. We started double digit and triple digit addition without regrouping today. The kids seemed to pick up on it quickly. This chapter will also introduce the concept of story problems. These are not easy, but I'm confident the students will understand them and be great problem solvers by year end. Please be encouraging during homework time. I know as a parent myself that this can be difficult at times. It is extremely important that your child be the one to read the problem and try it on their own. When you are asked for help, please start by asking your child what it is that they think they need to do. Most times when I ask this question they know how to solve it and do have the correct answer, but do not have the confidence to believe they are correct. The power of our words and the things we say to our children can make or break their confidence. Here is an example, the day before the test I told the class that I believed that everyone of them could get 100% on the test. I told them that they have all worked really hard and have completed all the work to prepare themselves. I think our results help prove that positive words can make a difference. Tell your child you believe in them and that you know they work hard, your words will go a long way!

We are continuing to practice using our reading strategies in class. I want to thank all the parents who have been taping up all of our new books. The students are so excited when I bring out new books. The National Geographic books are very popular. I am almost done meeting individually with students to set their reading goal. I will then match students who have the same goal to meet with in small groups to be sure they are making progress on their goal(s). This same format will also be happening with writing. I am also in the process of adding a reading program called Raz-Kids to our classroom reading time and computer lab time. Students will be able to access this site from home as well for more reading practice in a different format. Again any books read on this site can also count on the weekly homework. Please look for this information next week.

Science has started with practicing process skills using leaves from our playground. Students are observing attributes (size, shape, color, texture) of their leaves and will compare the similarities and differences as well. I would like students to bring in an apple next Thursday, October 11 so that we can use our new skills with our apples and then transform the apples into applesauce.
Extra practice at home would help reinforce the hundreds, tens and ones place. We will be approaching our first test soon in math. I will let you know ahead of time about that and students will complete a review in class which will be sent home for study purposes.

If you have not yet visited our class website, please take a look at the links page. I have given you the links to the two main sites we use for math and reading that you can access at home. The kids have been taught how to log in to each site. Xtra Math will require you to set up an account with the information I sent home. Tumble Books has the same username and password for our entire school. The username is Kinloch123 and the password is books. Please have your child show you around the sites. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784413819920208178.post-41221823104622170692012-09-18T13:51:00.000-05:002012-09-18T13:51:00.687-05:00Welcome!Welcome to our class blog! I will try to post as often as possible to let you know what is happening.

We are off to a great start in reading. We have been building our stamina for reading to ourselves and writing. Students are working hard and doing well at following the procedures for our reading time. I will continue to send home the Parent Pipelines home which explain the strategies we are working on . I hope to be able to post the Pipelines on the blog as well, but I have to check if I am able to do that.

Math time will be formatted similar to reading in that students will be introduced to choices during math time. Math Work is a must do choice everyday which is completing workbook work. If your child does not complete their work during this time, it will be sent home and expected back the following day. Students do have ample time to complete. While students are making choices and completing work, I work with small groups of 3 students at a time to reteach and help students complete work. For example, today I was able to work with 3 groups of three on reteaching the concept of ordering numbers. This was very helpful to the students. Groups are called by me sometimes and students have the opportunity to come to a group on their own as well. So far it is working well.

If you were not able to come to Open House, I will be sending a schedule of times available for Parent Teachers Conferences home with your child. There are limited time slots available since most parents signed up at the Open House. I took the pictures below during working on writing. Students really get into their writing during this time. It is fun to watch. I hope you enjoy the pictures.
I was so happy because this year's products and posters were some of the best since we started this unit three years ago. I know these projects are a lot of work, but your children truly enjoyed the experience. The current third and fourth graders kept saying "I want to go back to second grade to do Market Day!" Scroll through the pictures and hopfully you will get a sense of how much fun the kids had.
His adorable bird houses were in great demand. Once again the time and effort is quite apparent.
Second graders are studying goods and services for a social studies unit in economics. In addition, students are learning that businesses have expenses that have to be paid and the left over money is called a profit. All second graders will participate in Market Day which helps simulate running a business. All students have planned a business that provides either a good or a service. Students had to determine what a good price would be for their product or service in order to make a profit. We have also discussed how businesses have expenses such as taxes and rent. All students will need to pay taxes and rent on their business before they can declare a profit. During the month of March students will receive a weekly pay that they can shop with on Market Day.

In order to provide students with a real world experience, four ACO employees came to help us understand how stores purchase products and how they decide on the prices in order to make a profit. We also learned that ACO is a Michigan based company that employees 1200 people. Students learned that ACO carries a variety of products at good prices. The presenters demonstrated with real money how every $1 product at ACO is used to pay for expenses such as gas in delivery trucks, utility bills, and ACO employee paychecks. After expenses, the store is left with just a 2 cent profit! Students also learned that if products in the store get broken or damaged, this has an effect on the profit. ACO also told us that advertising is an important but expensive part of their business.

The presenters did a great job of explaining how a store runs and what they need to do to make happy customers as well as a profit. ACO also was very generous to all the second graders. Every second grader took home a kite, a yardstick, a kneeling pad for gardening and a super fun pair of glasses. In addition, they donated a new coffee pot that will be used for parent and community events. Thank you ACO!

I'm resending home the page in the Market Day packet that gives the guidelines and grading rubric for the Market Day poster. The poster is due on February 24. Students will have to stand in front of the class and give an oral presentation of their poster. Encourage your child to practice this at home. They need to speak in a loud, clear voice. I will be sitting at the back of the room to listen to the presentations. Speech is a necessary skill to learn and this is a good time to overcome shyness of speaking in front of a crowd. I have some pictures posted of past products and posters. The students have seen two slide-shows of pictures in class so they know what is expected.
Hopefully you are all rested and ready to start learning again. Below is a tentative outline for upcoming topics in math. I will note if dates are firm. We have a Quarterly Math Assessment coming up that will cover the first 4 units we have covered so far this year. The homework packet will have materials that will help students prepare for the test. Please contact me if you have any questions. The unit 4 test will require students to pay close attention to reading the story problem. We will spend this upcoming week discussing vocabulary and key words that help determine if we are adding or subtracting. Also 2-step problems will be part of this test and before we left for break, I noticed many students were not completing the second step, so we really need to concentrate on recognizing if we need to complete 2-steps. Students haven't fully grasped the concept that reading the problem several times is crucial in solving the problem; they want to get right to a numerical answer without comprehending what it is they are solving. Please help me reinforce this during homework by asking them what the problem wants them to find. Being able to verbalize what the problem is asking is a sign that they understand the problem.

The dates below are firm, no changes will be made.

Thursday, January 12: Unit 4 Test (reading and solving 1 & 2 step story problems.

Friday, January 13-Wednesday January 18: Review for Quarterly Test (covers all 4 units)

Thursday, January 19: 2nd Quarter Math Test (Cumulative test on units 1-4)

Unit 17: Picture Graphs

Unit 18: Lines & Surfaces (geometry)

Unit 19: Shapes and Patterns

We have a lot to cover before school, I'm happy I have an extra day in February! Don't forget that there is no school on Monday & Tuesday, February 20 & 21st. There will be an opportunity for parent teacher conferences on April 4th & 5th. This conference is usually for students who may not be progressing as they should or kids who have made great strides. Students who are consistently doing well will not be invited to a conference, but you may make an appointment if you have concerns. Conferences will be held from 5-7:30 on the 4th and 12:30-3:30 on the 5th. Please let me know in advance if you want a conference and what time you prefer.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Monday!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784413819920208178.post-3207791179035434272011-12-14T19:03:00.000-06:002011-12-14T19:03:28.894-06:00December: I can't believe it is the middle of the month!<span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It has been way to long since I have updated. I have been working on our School Improvement Plan with Mrs. Teer and Ms. Zahul. This is another part of my job at Kinloch, so I was attending meetings recently for our school. Every school must have a plan to assure student learning. We were recently visited by the State Department of Education to audit and review what we are working on at Kinloch. The review went well and we have some minor changes to make. Kinloch is a Title I school because of the number of free and reduced lunches at our building. We are given federal funds to help assist the students. Mrs. Teer and I write the plan for materials and professional development for our building. This is how our school is able to get all the technology you see in our building. I plan on giving more information on the Title I program on the website at a later date.

<span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here is what has been happening in the classroom:

Math:
We have completed Chapter 3 on subtraction. Our class average was 87%, but I had 2 students absent on the test day so this will change. After a test, I usually pull the students who did not make 80% during our choice time and review the math concepts with them. I then give students the opportunity to take another test and average the two test scores.
We started chapter 4 today which will cover both addition and subtraction in story problems. This can be a difficult concept for kids to be able to think through the words and how the numbers are related in a problem. We will focus on key words in problems and making sense of the information given. At the end of chapter 4, we will have an accumulative test on chapters 1-4. We will prepare in class and I will provide review work in the homework. I will be sending home a math packet for the winter break. Try to do 10-15 minutes/day just to help your child keep fresh....you would be suprised at what kids will forget in 2 weeks.

Reading:
I am in the process of DRA2 testing. This test is performed one-on-one with me. Students must read a book to me with both 96% accuracy and in a certain amount of time. If a child is reading too slow, they may not pass the test. The second part of the test is on comprehension. The student must retell the story in order with sufficient detail. You can have your child practice this by having them retell you what they read in their nightly reading. Students must also identify the lesson learned and talk about a connection they made while reading. Connections can be to another book they read, a movie they saw, or a personal experience. A connection happens when a reader reads something that jogs a memory for them. Our class is doing very well as of now and students are making good progress. I attribute this success to the great amount of reading students do daily in the classroom during read to self. Keep reading at home with your kids, make sure they read daily, this is the most important way to help your child be successful.

Science/Social Studies
We are continuing to work on our Power Point slides on landforms and our community. This is another challenging area to complete. I chose to make this an opportunity to teach students how to find facts and take notes on the facts. We are then taking the facts and writing a short summary on the topic. I work with each pair of students to finalize their writing and their slide. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784413819920208178.post-83300395743204846152011-11-18T10:33:00.002-06:002011-11-18T12:16:39.881-06:00November 18, 2011
Science: We have started our new unit in science which covers landforms and Earth's water sources. Students are working in pairs to research either a landform or water source. Students have learned how to read a book and find facts about their topic and write it in their own words. Students have several books on their topic to read and write down information. We will then take the information and learn how to write it in a summary. The summaries will be put into a Power Point presentation and a picture will be added . We will then have a presentation created by the whole class. We are also learning about the water cycle using the words evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Students will need to label a diagram using these words and showing which direction the water is moving. If you happen to see condensation on your windows or mirrors after a shower/bath point it out to your child. We will try to create condensation on a glass in class as well. Below are some pictures of students working on their research together.

Your kids are doing great with adding 2 & 3 digit numbers with regrouping. We started with using base 10 blocks then moved to paper pencil. I love how this math program offers plenty of practice. We use whiteboards with the Smartboard to begin lessons and when most students have concept, we move on to workbook pages. I will start sending home the workbook pages home on Friday so you can see the work they have been doing. The pictures that are posted are of our partner work. A majority of the class is very good about working with different partners.

We began Analogies and Compare/Contrast charts this week as well. These are both two skills that research has shown to boost student success. We are working on word analogies that are either antonyms (opposites) or synonyms (words with the same meaning). The kids did great today for the first time. Look for this work to come home every 2 days. An example of an analogy would be: hot is to cold as up is to____. Students have to recognize if it is an antonym or synonym in the first pair. In a compare contrast chart students must organize how 2 items are alike and different. We started by comparing a cat to a bird. Students will then learn to take the information in the chart and organize it into a written summary.

Please watch for a math review to come home next week. The review will be completed and checked in class. Students can take it home and study it to prepare for the test. Students will be prepared for the test if they are completing their daily classwork, homeowork and participating in class.
I hope to have this soon, we do not have a program like the middle and high school, but I'm trying to help keep you informed.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784413819920208178.post-29633355967972247172011-10-14T14:28:00.000-05:002011-10-14T14:28:08.360-05:00Fabulous Friday

Wow, I don't know where the week went! We were very busy with our apple investigations and making applesauce. This morning we completed part of our Apples to Applesauce science investigations sheet. We learned how to write a procedure using transition words. We also hypothesized how solid apples turn to liquid sauce. Our discussion also led to how matter changes states by changing temperature. We discovered that we used 3 single substances to create our applesauce mixture. After our great discussion we finally started the crock pot and smelled apples all day. Our afternoon was short because we had a practice evacuation drill that took a good 25 minutes. Our class did very well by the way. We were not able to have library checkout due to the drill, so I will have kids check out throughout the day on Monday. We have started our new math book and are looking at ways to write numbers to 1000. We are having to write numbers in words which is a new skill for second grade. The students are doing pretty well. We will talk about expanded notation on Monday. I will be putting new math homework in next week's packet that comes from the new program. Enjoy the pictures from our tasting of applesauce!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784413819920208178.post-58731031471068838582011-10-10T14:03:00.000-05:002011-10-10T14:03:31.401-05:00Marvelous Monday
The students had a substitute this morning while I met with the representative from our new math program. I sent home a note about the new program in your child's mail today. I'm excited about the parts to the program. Hopefully the student workbooks will arrive tomorrow. I will be sending home the old math book and students can use it for extra practice.

Zaher thinks this: Today we go new math books, they're very cool! They have very nice pictures.

Last Friday we used our observation skills and compared the attributes of 2 different types of rocks. Our classmate Hassan Z. brought back lava rocks from his trip to Hawaii. They were perfect for practicing observing attributes for our science unit. Attributes include: size, shape, texture, weight, color. We used balance scales to compare weight.

Hassan wrote this for our science lesson:

Today in science we told the difference between a lava rock and a regular rock. We looked at them with a magnifying glass. I loved it and so did the class. The lava rocks were so cool.

In writing, students are working on writing books. Some students chose to write nonfiction, others chose fiction. Our focus was punctuation. We discussed capitals and ending punctuation (Punctuation Takes A Vacation) by reading stories on the topic. Students are also illustrating their work. These stories may become a narrated video later on.

Elissa writes: Today in writing we learned about periods, exclamation points, question marks, commas, colons and capitalization. We wrote stories using some of these marks.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784413819920208178.post-13747916542458471892011-10-05T12:35:00.001-05:002011-10-05T12:36:27.934-05:00Terrific Tuesday
We started science today by observing some sage leaves I brought in from my garden. Students used their senses to describe how the leaf looked, smelled and some even tasted the sage.

In reading, we started talking about the features of non-fiction text. We also discussed the purpose of these features and how they help us read the text. Students looked through non-fiction books and then discussed how they are different from fiction. The features we found so far are:

Real pictures: The purpose is to make it more realistic and help us see things we might not see in our life.

Sub-titles: Sub-titles help us to get ready for what we will read. It is important to read the sub-titles.

Fact boxes: Fact boxes offer more facts about the topic. It is important to read the information in these boxes.

We will continue this discussion for the rest of the week. Our read aloud was with Mrs. Barion today. She will visit our class every Wednesday. Students benefit from hearing fluent readers read to them.

Math: We are working on addition right now. I will get trained on our new Math program on Monday, October 10. We will start it on Tuesday. Check back for regular updates.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
